Thailand's national sport is Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing as it is known to a lot of westerners. After more exposure from TV shows and famous movies such as "Ong Bak", Muay Thai is becoming more popular the world over. So what could be better than witnessing an evening's exciting Thai Boxing here in Bangkok, the home of the sport! With packed houses every evening, there are not many other sports that generate the electric atmosphere and level of noise and excitement that Thai Boxing does! Let's forget the 'nice' Queensberry rules of traditional boxing that use just two limbs, the fists. In Thailand, Muay Thai is a combat sport & martial art referred to as the Art of the Eight Limbs, as each fighter will strike with punches, kicks, elbows and knees for a truly spectacular fight. There are two main boxing stadiums where Thai Boxers will dream of becoming champion fighters: Rajadamnoen and Lumpini. Fights are fast and furious: each bout has five rounds of three minutes, with breaks of two minutes between rounds. Before their fight, the boxers will perform a 'wai khru' dance, where they are paying homage to their teachers.
Rajadamnoen Stadium is near the oldest part of Bangkok on Rajadamnoen Avenue.
- Fights are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 18:30 to 22:30 hrs.
- On Sundays the programme is longer from 18:00 to 22:30 hrs
The brand new state of the art Lumpinee Ramindra Stadium is on the outskirts of the city, which has taken over from the old Lumpini stadium on Rama IV Road which closed in early 2014.
- Fights are held on Tuesdays & Fridays from 18:30 to 22:30 hrs
- On Saturdays there are two programmes. The first is from 16:00 to 19:30 hrs and the second from 20:30 hrs to midnight
At either of these stadiums, you will have a ringside seat to witness the fights from the best possible viewpoint. Packed up behind you will be the locals in the 2nd and 3rd class tiers where you will see frantic hand signals as the bout progresses from the gambling. You'll be able to take a photo with some of the champion boxers during the evening.
